Ancillary Revenue refers to income generated by a hotel from products and services beyond its primary room revenue. These additional revenue sources can contribute to the hotel’s overall financial performance and guest experience.
How It Works
Hotels generate ancillary revenue through services such as restaurant and bar sales, breakfast, parking, spa treatments, meeting rooms, laundry, room service, and other paid amenities.
Revenue managers and hotel leaders analyze these revenue streams to identify opportunities to increase guest spending, improve service offerings, and strengthen overall profitability.
Practical Example
During a particular month, a hotel generates the following revenue:
- Room Revenue: CAD 400,000
- Restaurant and Bar Revenue: CAD 60,000
- Parking Revenue: CAD 15,000
- Meeting Room Revenue: CAD 25,000
Total Ancillary Revenue = CAD 60,000 + CAD 15,000 + CAD 25,000 = CAD 100,000
Total Revenue = CAD 400,000 + CAD 100,000 = CAD 500,000
In this example, ancillary revenue represents 20% of total revenue.
How to Interpret Ancillary Revenue
Ancillary revenue helps hotels diversify their income beyond room sales and make better use of their facilities and services.
However, higher ancillary revenue does not automatically mean higher profitability. Each service has its own operating costs, and hotels should evaluate the additional contribution generated rather than focusing on revenue alone.
Ancillary revenue can also be analyzed alongside occupancy, guest spending patterns, TRevPAR, and GOPPAR to obtain a broader view of hotel performance.
