Upselling

« Back to Glossary Index

Upselling is a sales technique in which hotel staff encourage guests to purchase a higher-priced room category, rate plan, or additional service than the option originally selected. The goal is to increase revenue while offering an option that better meets the guest’s needs.

How It Works

In hotels, upselling may involve offering a larger room, a suite, a room with a better view, or an enhanced package for an additional charge.

Successful upselling relies on understanding guest preferences, communicating the benefits clearly, and presenting relevant options at the right time. Offers may be made during the reservation process, before arrival, or at check-in.

Practical Example

A guest books a Standard Room for CAD 180 per night. The hotel offers an upgrade to an Executive Suite for an additional CAD 45 per night.

If the guest accepts the offer for a three-night stay:

Additional Upsell Revenue = CAD 45 × 3 = CAD 135

The hotel generates CAD 135 in additional room revenue before considering any incremental costs or the opportunity cost of the upgraded room.

How to Interpret Upselling

Upselling can increase average booking value and room revenue while improving the guest experience when the offer matches the guest’s preferences.

Hotels can evaluate upselling performance through acceptance rate, incremental revenue, average upgrade value, and guest feedback. Staff should present offers transparently and avoid pressuring guests into purchasing options they do not need.
