Direct Booking

« Back to Glossary Index

Direct Booking occurs when a guest makes a reservation directly with a hotel without using an intermediary booking platform, such as an online travel agency (OTA). Direct bookings can be made through the hotel’s website, by telephone, by email, or in person.

How It Works

Hotels encourage direct bookings through their official websites, loyalty benefits, personalized service, targeted marketing, and clear booking processes.

Direct bookings can reduce third-party distribution commissions and give hotels greater control over the guest relationship and access to reservation data, subject to applicable privacy requirements.

However, direct bookings still involve acquisition and operating costs, such as website maintenance, digital advertising, payment processing, and reservations staff.

Practical Example

A guest books a room directly through a hotel’s website at CAD 220 per night.

If the booking incurs CAD 8 in specified acquisition and transaction costs, the net room revenue after those costs is:

Net Room Revenue = CAD 220 − CAD 8 = CAD 212

For comparison, an OTA booking at the same room rate with a 15% commission would incur CAD 33 in commission:

OTA Commission = CAD 220 × 15% = CAD 33

Room revenue after OTA commission = CAD 220 − CAD 33 = CAD 187

These figures are illustrative. The actual cost of each channel depends on the hotel’s agreements and cost structure.

How to Interpret Direct Booking

Increasing direct bookings can improve profitability and strengthen the hotel’s relationship with its guests. However, the objective should not simply be to maximize direct booking volume. Hotels should compare the net contribution of each channel, the cost of acquiring reservations, conversion rates, and the potential value of repeat guests.
