Rate Parity

« Back to Glossary Index

Rate Parity refers to a pricing condition in which comparable room rates remain consistent across specified booking channels for the same room type, dates, occupancy, and booking conditions. The exact requirements depend on the agreements and rules applicable to the hotel and its distribution partners.

How It Works

Hotels monitor rates displayed on their direct booking website and third-party channels to identify discrepancies. Comparisons should account for differences in taxes, included services, cancellation policies, payment terms, and other booking conditions before determining whether rates are genuinely comparable.

Practical Example

Suppose a hotel offers the same room for the same dates and equivalent booking conditions:

  • Hotel website: $200 per night
  • OTA A: $200 per night
  • OTA B: $190 per night

The $10 difference between OTA B and the other channels may indicate a rate discrepancy that requires investigation. However, the hotel should first verify whether the rates have identical conditions and whether the difference results from a promotion, taxes, or another legitimate factor.

How to Interpret Rate Parity

Rate parity can help hotels maintain consistent pricing across distribution channels, but it should not be treated as a universal legal requirement. Applicable contracts, local regulations, and market-specific rules can differ. Revenue managers should investigate discrepancies carefully and follow the agreements and laws that apply to their property.
