Function Space Revenue

« Back to Glossary Index

Function Space Revenue refers to revenue generated from renting or providing event spaces within a hotel, such as meeting rooms, conference rooms, banquet halls, and other spaces used for business or social functions.

Depending on the hotel’s accounting practices, this revenue may include room rental charges and certain related fees. Food and beverage revenue, audiovisual services, and other event-related charges may be recorded separately.

How It Works

Hotels generate function space revenue by selling event spaces for activities such as:

  • Corporate meetings and conferences.
  • Weddings and private celebrations.
  • Banquets and receptions.
  • Training sessions and seminars.
  • Exhibitions and other organized events.

Pricing may depend on the size of the space, duration of use, date, expected demand, setup requirements, and the commercial agreement with the client.

Some hotels charge a fixed rental fee, while others may waive or reduce the rental fee when the event generates sufficient food and beverage revenue.

Practical Example

A hotel rents a conference room for a corporate meeting at CAD 1,200 for the day.

The client also purchases catering for CAD 2,500 and audiovisual services for CAD 500.

The revenue categories are:

  • Function space rental: CAD 1,200
  • Food and beverage: CAD 2,500
  • Audiovisual services: CAD 500

The total revenue associated with the event is CAD 4,200, but the function space revenue itself is CAD 1,200 if the hotel’s accounting policy records the other services separately.

How to Interpret It

Function space revenue helps hotels evaluate the commercial performance of their meeting and event facilities.

However, room rental revenue alone may not reflect the full financial value of an event. A meeting with a low rental fee may generate substantial catering or accommodation revenue, while another event may require significant setup and operating resources.

Hotels should therefore assess function space revenue alongside food and beverage revenue, room revenue, event-related costs, space utilization, and contribution margin.
