Room Night Production refers to the number of room nights generated by a particular customer account, market segment, distribution channel, group, or business source over a specified period.
Hotels use this measure to evaluate the volume of business generated by different sources and to assess their contribution to overall demand.
The term may also be used in sales and account management to describe the room-night volume produced by a corporate client, travel agency, or other business partner.
How It Works
Hotels track room night production to understand which accounts and business sources generate the most bookings.
Production can be measured using different reporting bases, including booked room nights, consumed room nights, or actual occupied room nights. The hotel should define which basis it uses to ensure that comparisons are meaningful.
Sales and revenue management teams may review production alongside room revenue, ADR, booking patterns, cancellation behavior, and profitability.
Practical Example
A corporate account generates the following room nights for a hotel during one quarter:
- January: 80 room nights
- February: 110 room nights
- March: 90 room nights
Total Room Night Production = 80 + 110 + 90 = 280 room nights
If the account generated CAD 56,000 in room revenue over those 280 room nights, its average daily rate would be:
ADR = CAD 56,000 ÷ 280 = CAD 200
These figures help the hotel evaluate the account’s volume and average room revenue.
How to Interpret It
High room night production indicates that a business source generates a substantial volume of room nights, but it does not automatically mean that the source is highly profitable.
For example, an account producing many room nights at heavily discounted rates may generate less room revenue than a smaller account booking at higher rates.
Hotels should therefore evaluate production alongside ADR, net revenue, acquisition costs, displacement risk, and the strategic value of the account.
