A Booking Engine is an online reservation tool that allows guests to search for room availability, compare rates, select booking conditions, and make reservations directly through a hotel’s website.
How It Works
A booking engine displays available room types, rates, restrictions, and booking conditions. Guests select their preferred option, enter their details, and complete the reservation according to the hotel’s booking process.
Depending on the hotel’s technology setup, the booking engine may connect with the Property Management System (PMS), Central Reservation System (CRS), payment gateway, and channel manager to exchange reservation, rate, and availability information.
Practical Example
A guest visits a hotel’s official website and searches for a two-night stay.
The booking engine displays an available room at CAD 220 per night. The guest selects the room, enters their information, and completes the reservation.
Room Revenue = 2 nights × CAD 220 = CAD 440
The reservation is then transmitted to the hotel’s reservation system according to the configured integrations.
How to Interpret Booking Engine
A booking engine is an important component of a hotel’s direct distribution strategy. An effective booking experience can reduce friction during the reservation process, support conversion, and help the hotel generate direct bookings.
Revenue managers should monitor booking conversion, abandonment rates, rate accuracy, mobile usability, and the total cost of acquiring direct reservations. A booking engine does not automatically guarantee the lowest distribution cost or the highest conversion rate.
