A Room Upgrade occurs when a guest is moved from the originally booked room category to a higher room category, typically offering additional space, better amenities, a preferred view, or other enhanced features.
An upgrade may be complimentary or offered for an additional charge.
How It Works
Hotels provide room upgrades for several reasons, including guest loyalty, service recovery, operational needs, and revenue-generating opportunities.
From a revenue management perspective, paid upgrades can increase revenue per reservation, while complimentary upgrades may support guest satisfaction or help manage room availability. Hotels should consider the availability and opportunity cost of higher-category rooms before offering upgrades.
Practical Example
A guest books a Standard Room for CAD 180 per night. The hotel offers an upgrade to an Executive Suite for an additional CAD 40 per night.
Upgrade Revenue = CAD 40 × 2 nights = CAD 80
If the guest accepts, the hotel generates CAD 80 in additional room revenue over the two-night stay, before considering any additional costs or the opportunity cost of the suite.
How to Interpret Room Upgrade
Room upgrades can improve the guest experience and create additional revenue opportunities. However, not every upgrade generates incremental revenue: complimentary upgrades may create value through guest satisfaction, while paid upgrades directly increase the reservation’s room revenue.
Hotels should track upgrade acceptance, incremental revenue, room-category availability, and the impact on guest satisfaction to evaluate their effectiveness.
